I've heard I'm not the first one to conceive of something like this.
At one point, as a kid, I grappled with the notion of the shape of the world. For the longest time, I imagined that it went on forever, and ever. If you dug down, you would keep digging for ever and ever, and the sky… well, we've already covered that to some degree.
And, not only did the world not end, but the sun moon and stars always rose in the east, and sat in the west, no matter where you were in the world.
Sometimes, when I look out to the horizon, if there are some clouds forming a front, it is easy to imagine that I'm looking on a skyline that is very distant, not curving away like it is won't to do on our little mud ball.
When you're high enough and the day is clear enough, you can see for miles, but the atmosphere still ends up fogging extremely distant objects. Imagine, if you will, looking off to a horizon that goes on, and like that mathematical principal of the endless decimal, never really touches the sky. Things in the distance get fainter as the air gets thicker, but you can still see more and more beyond what is possible with our round Earth.
What's fascinating is nobody could conquer a world like this. There would be immeasurable room for all kinds of cultures, races, beliefs. One could explore forever and never end up back where they started.
Sounds fun, don't it?
